Home Remedies for Itchy Scalp

Itchy scalp is not only awkward in social setup, but is also painful and can cause hair loss. Anxiety, poor hair care, dandruff, head lice, psoriasis, tinea capitis, poor diet and infections are some of the main causes of itchy scalp. Swelling and redness may be felt in addition to the itch.

You can get rid of the itchy scalp with the help of some kitchen ingredients and may not require expensive medicine with harmful chemicals.

Home Remedies for Itchy Scalp

You will get complete relief from the itchy scalp if you use one or more of the following home remedies regularly.

 

1. Lemon Juice and Yogurt

You can use both items separately or mix both and use to get even better results. There are 3 different ways to use lemon and yogurt.

Lemon Juice

Lemon contains vitamin C and has antiseptic properties to treat your dry and itchy scalp.

  • Cut 4-5 big size lemon and squeeze the juice out
  • Apply lemon juice on your scalp. Note that it will sting and if you cant bear the sting then dilute the juice with water before application.
  • Massage your scalp now for 5 minutes and then wait for 5 more minutes before rinsing with water.
  • Do this 2 times daily for a week.
  • Continue for another week after the itch has disappeared to get complete cure.

Always use unsweetened plain organic yogurt. Its active culture helps to reduce itch by getting rid of the underlying skin condition.

  • Take shower to make your hair wet
  • Apply yogurt on your entire scalp and on your hair
  • Leave it there for 15 minutes
  • Rinse your hair with water

Do it once every day. This will not only remove the itch from the scalp but will also make your hair shiny.

Lemon Juice and Yogurt Mix

This combination of lemon juice and yogurt will give faster benefits to get rid of the itch. Vitamin C from Lemon and active culture from yogurt will heal the itch.

  • Mix equal quantities of lemon juice and yogurt in a bowel. If you feel the sting then increase the quantity of yogurt.
  • Apply it on your scalp and hair and massage it for 5 minutes.
  • Leave it there for 15 minutes and rinse your hair

One application every morning should completely stop your itchy scalp within a week or 10 days.

2. Baking Soda

Baking soda works on dandruff and is a very useful remedy to get rid of the scalp itch caused by dandruff. It is abrasive and exfoliate the scalp to remove the flakes.

  • Prepare your scalp by applying a few drops of coconut oil for baking soda application. You can use any other pure oil such as olive oil or mustard oil.
  • Add a little water to a tablespoon of baking soda to make a thick paste
  • gently rub the paste on your scalp for 5 minutes and then let it be there for 10 minutes.
  • Rinse with water

Do it daily for a week.

 

3. Witch Hazel Oil

Witch hazel is most useful after the hair color begins to itch your scalp. It is a natural astringent which helps reduce inflammation.

  • Take a teaspoon of witch hazel oil and add two spoonfuls of water to make an emulsion
  • Massage your scalp gently with the emulsion for 10 minutes
  • Rinse your scalp with water

4. Jojoba Oil

Composition of jojoba oil is very similar to sebum. it effectively rejuvenates and helps dry scalp to stop itching. It also helps your hair to become strong so that you don't lose them due to itchy scalp.

  • Massage a little jojoba oil before going to bed every night
  • Rinse it the next day morning.

You can use the lemon juice therapy as given above in the morning before rinsing your hair for the best results.

5. Banana and Avocado

Banana helps to remove dryness of the scalp which is one of the main causes of the itch. it nourishes and moisturizes the scalp to remove flakes and inflammation. You can apply banana after application of lemon massage as given above for the best results. Adding Avocado makes it an excellent natural hair conditioner in addition to the softener of scalp.

  • Take two ripe banana and one ripe avocado. Make sure that both banana and avocado are not overripe.
  • Remove the pulp of banana and avocado in a bowl and mash them together well to make an endogenous mixture.
  • Apply to your scalp and leave it there for 15-20 minutes.
  • Wash your hair and scalp.

Do it regularly daily for a week to see the results. After that you can use it once every week to ensure good scalp nourishment.

6. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a solution to many skin problems because of its anti-inflammatory properties that kills the yeast or bacteria. Another important job it does is to balance the ph levels of the skin so that the dryness goes away and the itch stops.

It will be more efficient if you wash and dry your hair before the application of apple cider vinegar

  • Dilute Apple Cider Vinegar by adding an equal quantity of water
  • Apply the diluted solution by cotton ball on your scalp by parting hair. Depending on the denseness of your hair the application may take 5-10 minutes to cover the entire scalp.
  • After applying massage the scalp for 5 minutes
  • Cover your head with a towel and leave it there for 15-20 minutes before washing it off with water.
  • Apply conditioner

You can do this every alternate day for a week to 10 days to stop the itch on scalp

7. Sesame Seed Oil

Sesame oil nourishes your scalp, therefore use it after the lemon or apple cider therapies given above.

  • Warm sesame oil and massage your scalp for 5 minutes in the night before going to the bed.
  • Wrap your head with a hot towel for 15 minutes
  • Dry your hair with a dry towel
  • Rinse your hair next day

Additional Care to Stop Itchy Scalp

Stress is one of the main contributors to the itch on the scalp. Practice yoga and meditation.

Dryness and dehydration is another big contributor to itchy scalp. Drink at-least 8-10 glasses of water every day.

Avoid using chemicals such as harsh shampoos.

Always sleep on the washed bed sheets and pillow covers to avoid any infections.
