Bursitis is not arthritis. It is a painful inflammation of the bursa caused by bumping,bruising, repeated pressure or overuse of the affected joint.

Bursitis is more common in the knee but all the major joints ranging from the shoulder, elbow, hip, ankle, heel to the base of the big toe.

Bursa is a fluid filled sac to protect muscles, tendons, ligaments and the skin to rub against the bones. Any strenuous exercise or activity can flare up bursitis. Don't be surprised if bursitis flare up without any provocation to the joints. It sometimes does flare up for no reason.

There are many home remedies for bursitis that can give you pain relief as well help to heal it fast. You may also have to readjust your lifestyle a little bit to stop getting flare ups.

Though bursitis is generally considered an old age condition, but any one, particularly athletes and sports people can get it more often than others.

Important thing to remember is that once you get bursitis, you are more prone to get it again.

You may not be old, athlete or a sports person but you love to go to the gym. If you overexert you are also likely to get bursitis some time or the other. if you do get it, don't fret. Just act on the following

  • Apply ice to reduce swelling
  • Take sufficient rest
  • Take painkillers if required
  • Avoid any pressure on the joint during sleeping or walking
  • Apply compression wrap or knee sleeve
  • Keep you knees elevated (if you have the knee bursitis)
