What Is Indigestion and How to Deal With It?

Indigestion is one of the most common digestive problems. In simple terms you can say Indigestion (dyspepsia) is just another term used for an upset stomach. Indigestion may occur when certain food don’t agree with some people or people eat too much too fast. Smoking, drinking alcohol or stress can become catalyst for indigestion. Sleep disturbances can also some times contribute to indigestion.

So What is Indigestion Exactly?

Indigestion is a discomfort or a burning feeling in the upper abdomen. It is most likely to be accompanied by abdominal bloating, belching, nausea, and sometimes vomiting. Sometimes indigestion can be accompanied by heartburn.

Most people generally suffer from indigestion after a large meal but you can get it at any time. Indigestion and heartburn are common problems for people of all ages. Generally initial medication is similar for both the conditions.

Indigestion is generally not a serious condition. Some over the counter medicines or home remedies can cure it. However if you have it frequently then it may be a sign of a more serious condition. You must consult your doctor.

Following are the reasons to see the doctor:

  • If the it is not responding to normal treatments
  • If your stool is black it indicates blood in the stool. Blood in the stool can be a symptom of serious problems like ulcers, intestine infections and cancers. So don’t ignore it.
  • If you vomit persistently then it can be a some infection.
  • If you vomit blood in addition to the indigestion, then it is a serious indication of stomach or lung problems.
  • If you begin to lose weight without trying then there may be other medical conditions causing it.
  • If general felling of being not well persists then it is time to take it seriousely.
