What is Diaper Rash and How It Affects Babies?

It may appear as slight redness on the diaper covered area of the skin of infants and toddlers. Adults who are forced to wear diapers due to their inability to restrain natural discharges or evacuations of urine or feces are also prone to this condition. Our focus here will be on rashes on the infants.

So what is diaper rash and how to deal with it?

It is a normal but uncomfortable and irritating part of being a baby. It is a general term for skin irritation in the region of the skin covered by diapers. It is an inflammation of the skin that sometimes may occur for no known reason.

The skin of the affected region turns slightly red and occasionally feels warm to the touch. The continued irritation can spread rashes to a larger area. Infant’s thighs may also become irritated. The causes for these rashes are many including from extended exposure to urine or feces to semi-allergic response to baby wipes or detergents. It is important to understand that the diaper rashes are not caused by parental ignorance as some parents like to think. However, parental neglect can aggravate the condition.

In majority of cases the rashes appear between 9 and 12 months of age but it is not uncommon to see it in infants within a weak of their birth.

Whatever may be the cause, maintaining proper hygiene helps in significantly reducing discomforts, irritations and its spread to a wider region! Regular wiping and some time exposing the baby to the natural air helps controlling it and reducing the probability of spreading in the other areas of the skin.

You should be careful to ensure that it doesn't become yeast infection which certainly requires medical attention.

If the rashes appear deep red and raised causing discomfort to the baby or if the normal methods of cleaning up the rashes don't work then consult doctor.
