What is Diabetes and How to Deal With It?It is estimated that more than 8% of US population has diabetes. Unfortunately about 2% of the population is unaware that they have diabetes. Diabetes affects the entire body. So what is diabetes?Diabetes is a serious metabolism disorder. Metabolism is simply a mechanism by which our bodies use digested food for energy and growth. During the digestion process most of the food is broken down into glucose (a form of sugar). Insulin is the hormone that is produced by the pancreas. The pancreas releases adequate quantity of insulin to move the glucose present in the blood into the cells. When glucose leaves the blood stream and enters cells the blood sugar level falls. Now if the blood sugar level doesn’t fall in a person then that means insulin, which is essential for moving glucose from the blood steam to the cells, is not doing its job. That means either the pancreas is not producing enough insulin, not producing it at all or the insulin produced is not doing its job. This result in excessive glucose builds up in the blood which eventually passes out of the body in urine. This condition of cells not being able to get enough glucose is called diabetes. Diabetes can be easily detected by access glucose levels in the blood stream. Because all body tissues need a steady supply of glucose, diabetes affects every organ. In particular it can lead to kidney failure, heart diseases, blindness and nerve problems. Excess body fat especially around the belly resists in insulin and doesn’t allow it to get into the cells; therefore obese people have higher chances of catching diabetes.
