What is Dehydration – Is it Dangerous?


Dehydration means loss of body fluids and salts. This loss can happen due to variety of reasons. Whatever are the reasons for dehydration, it is important to understand that it can lead to many complications including death.

So treat your dehydration quickly. In majority of cases an adult will consciously or subconsciously replenish the lost fluids by drinking enough fluids and eating food containing salts and minerals.

The human body needs water to maintain effective functioning of blood and other body fluids. In addition to the water the blood requires various electrolytes found in salts to keep a person healthy.

Causes of dehydration are mainly vomiting and diarrhea. Other main cause include sweating due to physical activates like sports. Frequent urinating and continuous exposure to air-conditioning are also responsible for dehydration.

When body loses substantial amount of fluid the body gets dried up or dehydrated.

Under normal daily routine we lose body fluids in the form of sweat, tears, urine and stool. This has to be replenished by drinking water and other fluids to compensate for the lost fluid and other daily requirements of the fluids by the body.

One of the obvious but hugely ignored reasons for dehydration is that people don’t drink enough fluids in their daily routine. So, though there is no underlying ailment that is causing dehydration but it is the habit that is causing it.

Dehydration will lead to exhaustion, loss of energy and in extreme cases of severe dehydration can lead to death.

Dehydration caused by diarrhea is one the biggest cause of premature children death in the world.

So what ever is the cause of dehydration, it can not be taken lightly. The body fluids must be replenished properly by drinking sufficient water and other fluids like juices and milk and its liquid derivatives.
