What is Dandruff and How to Deal With It?

For most of the people Dandruff is very frustrating and embarrassing. However, by understanding what is dandruff, what causes it and how to control and treat it can release most the unnecessary stress.

Let us first understand what is dandruff? Our skin constantly renews itself; dead cells from the scalp fall off and replaced by new cells. This is the way we all naturally replace skin cells.

In simple terms dandruff is the process of fast replacement of skin cells where a larger number of cells are shed in clumps (flakes). The flakes are big enough to be visible particularly on dark cloths.

There is a misconception that people get it because their scalp is too dry. As a result they reduce washing frequency because they think washing with shampoo will make the condition worse. This is not true at all.

Flaking only happens because of an increased turnover of skin cells. In addition to the scalp, sides of the nose, eyebrows and central front of the chest can also be affected by dandruff. These patches can be pink or red with greasy looking scales.

Another misconception is that most people think that it is a disease. The fact is that it is simply a natural process of getting rid of the dead skin cells on the scalp as mentioned earlier. Since it occurs naturally, there is no cure, it just can only be treated and controlled.

According to some recent findings, dandruff is also believed to be associated with an overgrowth of a fungus (Pityrosporum ovale) commonly found on the skin and scalp.

Dandruff is neither dangerous nor it cause baldness. It is not even contagious. Most people really are unnecessarily over concerned that they will catch it by coming in contact with someone who has dandruff. They will not!

It can occur at any age. It affects obese people as well as people with acne more than others. It also occurs more in the people living in dry and cold climate.

Sometimes it's difficult to differentiate between sever dandruff and the scalp psoriasis in its early stages.
