What is a Sore Throat- Is it Serious or Just a Passing Condition?

A sore throat is a common condition experienced by most of us more frequently than any other condition that affect us regularly.  It is almost impossible to not have a sore throat during our lifespan.

It is symptom of an underlying condition or many conditions simultaneously affecting the patient.  It is not a disease itself.

The underlying causes of sore throat in most cases range from simple common cold to flu. However in most cases the sore throat is non life threatening and easily curable condition. In most cases it is self healing.

A sore throat usually goes away within a week. There is no need to panic if you see early signs of throat irritation. If it doesn’t go away within a week then only you may need medication or see a doctor.

Both viruses and bacteria can cause sore throat. However most of the sore throats are viral and self curing within short periods. Some viruses are responsible for severe cases of sore throats such as, glandular fever. It affects young people and most of the sufferers recover from it within four to six weeks without any treatment.

Bacterial attacks can also make the throat sore. Most common one of the bacterial attack based sore throat is called strep throat.

Sore throats can easily be confused with other conditions that affect parts of the throat such as sinusitis, bronchitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis or pharyngitis. So if the sore throat doesn’t go away within a week then you must meet your doctor.

Usually it is difficult to find out the underlying cause of sore throat easily. If it is viral then there is no need to worry but if it is bacterial then you may need medical attention. Other symptoms like fever help differentiating the cause of sore throat.
