What are Hemorrhoids? Are Hemorrhoid Life Threatening!
When veins around the anus or lower rectum get swollen or inflamed hemorrhoids are formed. What makes hemorrhoids different then other boils and abscesses is that it happens in blood vessels unlike the others which are skin problems.
So What is a Hemorrhoid and How It is Formed?
A hemorrhoid is an enlarged vein in and around the anus. Enlarged veins are also called varicose veins.
Normally, the tissue around the anus fills with blood to regulate bowel movements. When this blood flow is restricted due to constant pressure or any other reason, the veins become inflamed. The restricted or intermittent blood flow may cause a blood clot. That results in a painful, swollen lump. This lump is called a hemorrhoid.
Hemorrhoids usually are not dangerous or life threatening. In most cases, hemorrhoid disappears within a few days.
Chronic constipation or diarrhea, pregnancy and intimate anal relationships are some of the known causes that restrict the blood flow in the lower rectum which ultimately leads to formation of hemorrhoids.
These hemorrhoids can either be inside the anus (internal) or be under the skin around the anus (external).
Hemorrhoids are common in both men and women and every other person has it during his/her lifetime. Hemorrhoids are also common among pregnant women. The fetus pressure on the abdomen and hormonal changes, cause the veins to enlarge. For most women, however, hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy are only temporary problems.
As we know now that everyone can have hemorrhoids at some time. Genetics plays an important role in increasing the possibilities of formation of hemorrhoids. Sitting too long on a chair or standing for long hours regularly for many months increases the chances. Obesity is another risk factor.
Hemorrhoids may be itchy painful and embarrassing condition but it is not a dangerous condition.
