Types of Psoriasis - Understand Different Psoriasis Types

There are many different types of psoriasis. Each one of them is different in its severity and the part of the body it affects.

Following are some of the most prominent types of psoriasis:

1- Plaque Psoriasis

This is the most common type of psoriasis. More than 80% people affected by psoriasis fall under this category.This usually affects elbow,knees and trunk. It appears in patches of 1cm and bigger and is characterized by red raised patches withsilvery white, scaly coating on the skin.

2- Guttate Psoriasis

Roughly 10% of the people suffering from psoriasis fall under this category making it the second most common type of psoriasis.  This usually appears suddenly on the trunks and limbs. it affects children and young adults. It appears as widespread red spots and sometimes disappear without any medication to never appear any time in the future. However a sever outbreak which is rare requires treatment.

3- Pustular Psoriasis

Pustular psoriasis is not very common. It is  visible as pus-filled bumps (pustules) on the skin. The pustules can appear heal and reappear soon. Pustular psoriasis usually is localized to palms and soles of the feet. it can also be widespread across the body  leading to fever and life-threatening conditions and often requires hospitalization. It generally occurs in adult as a sideeffect of some medication containing lithium or cortisone etc.

4- Seborrheic psoriasis

Seborrheic psoriasis (Inverse psoriasis) is not common usually affects overweight people in the armpits and groin and under the breasts due to body friction and sweating. It appears as red, inflamed and tender shiny patches. This may lead to yeast and fungal infections due to the areas of the body it affects.

5- Erythrodermic Psoriasis

Erythrodermic Psoriasis (Exfoliative psoriasis) can occur in conjunction with pustular psoriasis or on its own. It can be seen as a scaly, red and inflamed rash over the entire body. It is Itchy and extremely painful. It should be closely monitored. In sever cases the skin loses its ability to regulate temperature and perform other functions causing life-threatening dehydration, fever, and infection. Under such circumstances hospitalization becomes necessary.
