Different Types of Eczema

Between 10 to 20 % of the world population suffers from different types of Eczema. Anybody can get it, but those with a family history will have greater chances of developing the disease.

It is characterized by dry, rough, red, itchy skin. When you scratch the itchy parts rashes develop.

Following are the details of different types of Eczema:

Types of Eczema  1- Atopic:

Atopic eczema is the most common form of the condition. Sensitivity to allergens is termed as Atopic. The exact reasons of atopic eczema are unknown, but it generally occurs in people who are prone to allergies. It  mainly affects children and some people who have hay fever or asthma.

Males and females and people from different ethnic backgrounds are all affected equally. This type of eczema can be caused due to skin contact to a substance to which an individual is allergic. The same substance may not cause it in other people who are not allergic to it. Contact with irritating chemicals, powders, cleaning agents, etc. is likely to cause eczema in any person in varying degree of severity.

Types of Eczema  2- Discoid (Nummular)

Discoid or nummular eczema, is a type of chronic skin condition generally affects adults. Children rarely get affected by it.  It is usually seen on the lower legs, hands and forearms but it can affect any part of the body.

Size of the patch (oval plaque) in the affected area of discoid eczema is generally half a centimeter or bigger.  These oval plaques have well defined edges with a red base and are made of tiny raised red spots and scaling. Central heating and dry environment makes the  condition worse. If not treated, it can last for months or even years.

Types of Eczema  3- Seborrhoeic:

This type of Eczema is found the nappy areas and the scalp in infants.  Adults also get it on the scalp and on the sides of the nose. Seborrhoeic can be caused by yeast infection.

Other types of Eczema include pompholyx (Dyshidrotic eczema) and  miscellaneous eczema of the legs caused by varicose veins.
