Anemia is a common term used for many different disorders which reflect inability of red cells to carry sufficient oxygen. So it is important to understand the different types of anemia for a suitable treatment. Anemia types vary from a mild condition where simple symptoms like feeling weak to a sever condition in which shortness of breath to fainting can occur.

Some of the most prominent types of anemia are described under:

Anemia Types 1- Iron Deficiency Anemia

This is one of the most common types. This simply means some type of blood loss. The common reasons for blood loss are, bleeding ulcers, surgery patients, accident victims and those with chronic nose bleeding. Women with heavy menstrual cycle, chronic dieters, women athletes, long distance runners and people with vegetarian diets usual suffer from Iron deficiency Anemia.

Anemia Types 2- Pernicious Anemia

Deficiency of Vitamin B12 is the main reason for Pernicious anemia. Vitamin B12 is necessary to produce red blood cells.

Anemia Types 3- Hemolytic Anemia

This is one of more severe types. In hemolytic anemia red blood cells are destroyed more rapidly then they are produced. This can be acquired or it can be hereditary. Its severity can range from a very mild to life threatening.

Leukemia and other cancers can cause Hemolytic anemia. Severe hypertension and abnormal functioning of the spleen are some of the other reasons for this condition. Another cause include an auto immune system disorder.

Anemia Types 4- Sickle Cell Anemia

Mostly this condition is inherited blood disorder.  It is predominant in people of African ancestry, people who are of Mediterranean descent and people from Middle Eastern origin.

Sickle cell anemia is related to the shape of the red blood cells. It occurs when RBCs change shape due to inheritance of two abnormal genes (one each from both parent).  These distorted cells are more stiff and curved in the shape of a sickle (an old farm tool). Normal RBC cells are flexible and disc-shaped.
