Toothache Causes and How to Avoid Them?

Toothache usually is a pain around the teeth, jaws, or some times in the neck and even the chest. It may lead to headaches and interfere with daily activities. Generally toothaches are caused by tooth or jaw problems. Common causes of toothache are as under:

Dental Cavities

Dental cavity is the most common cause of a toothache. Dental cavities are nothing but holes in the two outer most layers of a tooth.

Enamel is the outermost white hard surface and the yellow layer beneath is called dentin. Both layers protect the inner living tooth tissue where blood vessels and nerves reside. Acid produced from sugar by certain bacteria in the mouth gradually dissolves the enamel and dentin, creating cavities.

Small shallow cavities may remain unnoticed and may not even cause pain. The larger deeper cavities which can irritate the inner living pulp of the affected tooth by cold, hot or sour foods causing toothache. Even bacteria toxins can irritate the inner lining and cause pain.

Gum Disease

After the dental cavities this the second most common cause. Gum disease is caused by bacteria in the plaque that gets accumulated over time along the gum line. This plaque is usually comprised of food, saliva, and bacteria. First the gum bleeding occurs in the early stages of the gum disease. Later on as the disease progresses it causes loss of bone around the teeth and formation of gum pockets. Bacteria thrive in these pockets causing gum infection, pain and further bone destruction.

Cracked Tooth Syndrome

Some time a tooth can get fractured without associated cavity or advanced gum disease. These fractures are usually caused by chewing or biting hard objects such as hard candies, nuts, etc. Biting on the fractured area can cause severe and sharp pains.

Impaction & Eruption

Some times a pair of teeth pressing together (Impacted) or tooth growing out (erupting) or molar teeth-large teeth in the back of the jaw (cutting) inflames the nearby tissues causing pain. Impacted teeth usually require pain medication, antibiotics, and surgical removal.
