Symptoms of Herpes: Genital Herpes Symptoms

Herpes symptoms vary from person to person. Some people may not have any symptoms but they can infect the other partner. This makes it some times difficult to prevent it from passing on to others.

Following are typical herpes symptoms:

The first outbreak

It takes 2-20 days to develop from the day of contracting the virus. In some cases it might take even longer. In some cases it may be so mild that it goes unnoticed. However in most cases it is more painful than subsequent outbreaks. Usually the out break lasts for 1-3 weeks. It starts with tiny red bumps appearing and spreading.  These tiny red bumps may develop into blisters and open lesions. These bumps may appear around the vaginal area, the cervix, the penis, urinary tract of both men and women, and around the anal opening, buttocks or thighs. The sores normally heal without scarring within a fortnight or three weeks.

In the first outbreak symptoms of genital herpes tend to take longer to heal because the body has not yet  build up an immune system to resist the viral outbreaks. Subsequent out breaks are less severe and less painful.

The infected area is usually painful and itchy with burning sensation and tingling. The genital herpes symptoms in the first outbreak may also include fever, headache, muscle aches, and swollen glands in the groin area, painful urination or vaginal discharge.

Genital herpes can infect the other person orally and the oral herpes (cold sores) infected person  can infect the partner to develop symptoms of genital herpes.

Subsequent occurrences

Subsequent re-occurrences generally cause outbreaks of blister. These episodes are less severe and painful than the first outbreak. The severity and frequency of occurrence both reduce over the passage of time. They begin to heal faster. However the pain and discomfort semains for some time even after complete disappearance of the symptoms of genital herpes.
