Symptoms of Heartburn and How to Take Handle Them?

Heartburn is not a disease but is a symptom of underlying digestive disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Acid reflux.

Symptoms of heartburn may be triggered by different reasons in different people. The most common manifestations of the heartburn symptoms are as under:

Burning Sensation in the Chest.

Burning sensation usually occurs after eating food and can last from a few seconds to several hours.  A burning feeling begins behind the breastbone and sometimes may travel up to the throat.

Pain in the Chest.

During lying down position or bending after a big meal a burning pain may be felt in the center of the chest. This quickly spreads to the neck. It eventually dies down on its own.

Burning Feeling in the Throat.

The feeling is as if the food is coming out of the throat. This usually begins at the lower end of the throat and rises up.

Sour or Bitter Taste in the Mouth.

When the stomach contents reflux up into the esophagus to occasionally reach the back of the throat, the sour or bitter taste can be felt in the mouth.

Difficulty in Swallowing.

Swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) may be felt when food does not move normally from the mouth through the esophagus to the stomach. This may lead to chest pressure, sensation of food sticking in the throat or a feeling of choking. Difficulty in swallowing could be a sign of several other conditions therefore it should be evaluated by a doctor.

Asthma like Wheezing

Chronic coughing or asthma like symptoms are also felt by people suffering from heartburn. Several studies have shown a direct link of Asthma patients (almost 60% of all) to have heartburn due to Acid reflux or GERD.

Heartburn whether due to acid reflux, GERD or any other reasons is a painful experience in varying intensities.
