Sinus Infection Causes and How to Avoid Them?

It is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. Sinus infection causes a headache or pressure in the eyes, nose, cheeks, or on one side of the head.  Infected person may also have a cough, a fever, bad breath, and nasal congestion with thick nasal secretions.

It may be caused by anything that interferes with airflow into the sinuses and the drainage of mucous out of the sinuses.

Viral infections.

Viral infections usually damage the cells of the sinus lining, leading to inflammation. The thickened lining obstructs the nasal passage which connects to the sinuses. The obstruction disrupts the process to removes bacteria normally present in the nasal passages. As a result the bacteria begin to multiply and invade the lining of the sinus causing sinus infection. Allergens and pollutants also produce a similar effect.

Bacteria.

There are also various kinds of bacteria and Fungi particularly black mold which thrives in moist and damp areas of the house are some of the main causes of sinus infection. Regular breathing in of Black molds reduces natural immune system. Fungi can also infect people with diseases such as AIDS, GERD, leukemia, hypothyrodism and even diabetes that weaken the immune system.

Structural abnormalities

Structural abnormalities such as a  deviated septum (the bony protrusion inside the nose that separates the nasal passages), deformities such as bone spurs inside the sinus cavities, polyps in the nasal passageways enlarged adenoids, and tumors and cleft palate are usual suspects for chronic conditions of this infection.

Nasal sprays.

Overuse of over the counter nasal sprays can also be addictive and be the cause the condition.

Ice creams.

A highly overlooked cause is excessive consumption of ice-cream. Home made ice cream with natural flavors and no preservatives will not pose any threat. It is the preservatives and flavors used in the ice creams that infects people with the condition.
