Seborrheic Dermatitis- Scalp and Facial Skin Disease

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin inflammation which causes flaking of the skin. It mainly affects scalp eyebrows, ear canals, sides of the nose, and behind the ears. It sometimes affects the armpits, chest and in the groin area.

Dandruff, seborrhea and cradle cap are some of the other names that are interchangeably used by some people. However, there are differences.

Dandruff causes scaling on the scalp but does not cause any redness. Seborrhea, is characterized by excessive oiliness of the skin, especially of the scalp and face. It may also cause eyebrow dandruff. In this case there is neither redness nor scaling. Seborrhea sufferer may develop seborrheic dermatitis at late stage, which causes both redness and scaling.

Seborrheic dermatitis has two distinct features; flaky patches and redness. It is itchy and painful.

Seborrheic dermatitis strikes infants on the scalp and is called “cradle cap.” It usually disappears  between 8 and 12 months of age without any treatment.

Unlike other dermatitis where people with dry skin get the inflammation, it is the oily skin that attracts Seborrheic dermatitis.

People with Parkinson's disease, cranial nerve palsies, major truncal paralyses or similar central nervous system disorders also appear to be prone to the development of seborrheic dermatitis.

These people tend to develop more extensive disease. It is felt that the seborrheic dermatitis in these patients is a result of increased pooling of sebum caused by immobility. This increased sebum pool leads to seborrheic dermatitis.

Normally adults can use medicated shampoos to treat the mild condition. Sever conditions are treated with steroids creams. There is no permanent cure or treatment but it can be controlled. In some cases it disappears completely.

However, it the condition is chronic and doesn’t respond to normal treatment
a skin biopsy or other laboratory test may be necessary to eliminate the possibilities of skin cancer or other diseases.
