How to Prevent Indigestion?
Some people can't prevent indigestion if certain food don't agree with them. Others find it difficult because either they eat too much or eat too fast or both. There are many other catalysts like, alcohol, smoking and lack of enough sleep which cause indigestion.
Logically it should be easy to prevent indigestion if these habits are changed. In most cases this is how indigestion is generally prevented. Changing these habits is easy if a disciplined approach is maintained. But before we develop a plan to change habits let us also understand how digestion happens.
About 22 different types of digestive enzymes from the salivary gland, stomach and small intestine help digesting the food we eat. Different enzymes help digesting different kinds of food i.e, amylases help digest carbohydrates, proteases break down proteins, and lipases break down fat and lipids. These digestive enzymes help our body digest and absorb the required nutrients for growth.
To enable these enzymes to break down the specific food and do their job effectively develop the following eating habits
- Find out which food don't agree with you. Reduce their consumption.
- Consciously begin to eat slowly by chewing food several times. Initially it may be difficult but slowly you can get into this new habit and not only avoid indigestion but also enjoy the whole process of eating.
- Don't eat too much at one time. Eat smaller portions several times.
- Don't eat late during the day. Your final food intake should be at least 3 hours before sleeping.
- Don't sleep immediately after lunch!
- Eat lot of fiber containing food and avoid sugary, fatty junk food.
- Chew more and eat less.
The above changes in eating habits will have long term positive impact on your digestion and overall health.
