  2. Research has shown that maintaining healthy eating habits not only helps preventing high blood pressure but it also helps lowering already elevated blood pressure. Develop a habit of eating fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products, whole grain, poultry, fish and nuts which have low fats and cholesterol.
  3. Another research has linked high sodium intake to high blood pressure. Most people consume much more than the daily recommended 2400mg of sodium which is equivalent a teaspoon of common table salt a day. If you consume roughly 1500mg of sodium or less than your blood pressure will not rise. it has also been found that a low sodium diet help the medicine work better if you are taking medicine to reduce blood pressure.
  4. Blood pressure rises with body weight increase. Even a 10 pounds reduction in your weight can help reducing your blood pressure. Obesity is not only bad for the blood pressure but can also cause other heart diseases. So keep your weight under control.
  5. Even passive smoking is as dangerous as smoking. Smoking hardens arteries which causes the blood pressure to rise and also leads to heart attacks. So quit smoking.
  6. Consuming too much alcohol raises blood pressure, injures kidneys, lever and brain. So remember to consume less if you have to consume at all.

All the above recommendations are easy to understand and follow yet many people find it difficult to adhere to the lifestyle. This is because they lack the discipline. So be disciplined and prevent high blood pressure!
