Premature Ovarian Failure (OPV) – What is Premature Ovarian Failure?


Approximately 1-3 % women worldwide suffer from premature ovarian failure. This makes it a large number of women who may lose their fertility prematurely.

There is very high probability that Premature Ovarian Failure may lead to premature menopause. However in some cases of POF, it is possible to get back to occasional ovulation that may lead to pregnancy.

The periods during POF may be irregular and abnormal but they may occur.

Until premature menopause is confirmed, Premature Ovarian Failure should not be treated as permanent loss of woman’s fertility cycle.

So What is Premature Ovarian Failure?

Decrease in ovarian function of producing hormone or early cessation of menstrual cycle in women before the age of 40 is defined as Premature Ovarian Failure (POF).

Women losing their menstrual cycle above the age of 45 is normal process of ageing , but women losing their menstrual cycle before the age of 40 is not normal at all.

The reasons for such abnormality may be linked to genetics but actual causes are really not yet clearly understood.

Premature Ovarian Failure will imitate all the symptoms of menopause including, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings and others such as lack of sexual drive, vaginal dryness and irritability etc

Extra care needs to be taken after Premature Ovarian Failure because osteoporosis may cause bone damage, cholesterol build up may lead to heart diseases and thyroid dysfunction may occur.

Since the risks of such problems are high proper medical attention becomes a necessity for the sufferer of Premature Ovarian failure.

Medical attention doesn’t really mean medication. In most cases diet control and regular exercises will do. However, hormone therapy may be required in some extreme circumstances.
