Pink Eye Home Remedies

Pink eye is irritating but it poses no permanent threat to your eyes. It is also called Conjunctivitis. In this condition the white part of the eye looks pinkish.

When Conjunctiva-the material that covers the white part of the eye becomes inflamed the affected eye becomes pink. In most cases natural remedies for pink eye will clear conjunctivitis.

Causes of Pink Eye

Most conjunctivitis or pink eye is generally caused by allergies, viral or bacterial infections.

Allergies to some types of chemicals in the makeup, exposure to factory fumes, tobacco smoke and chlorine in the swimming pool can cause pink eye.

Pollen and house duct are the other usual suspects in case of allergic conjunctivitis.

Then there are viral and bacterial conjunctivitis. Both types are highly contagious.  The infection starts in one eye and easily spreads to the other. These types of contagious pink eyes are common among children.

Symptoms for pink eye

It all begins with itchy sensation of the affected eye. Eye turns pink or red with burning sensation with watering. There can be sticky discharge from the eye which can sometimes seal the eyelid while sleeping.

The Bacterial conjunctivitis discharge is usually thicker than the viral pink eye.

Pink Eye Home Remedies

Eat more fruits and vegetable particularly those which are rich in Vitamin A and B12. Tomato, carrot, pumpkin, green leafy vegetables, mango papaya, banana and all citrus fruit will help.

As in the cases of many other conditions, good home remedies for pink eye emerge from the kitchen.

Reduce intake of starchy foods like potato, white rice, sugar and all white flour preparations.

And importantly, a practical home remedy for conjunctivitis to avoid spreading to others is to wear dark glasses and avoid swimming.

Chamomile tea bags compresses are very useful in providing pink eye relief. Just moist a chamomile tea bag and place it over the affected eye closed. Keep it there for 5-7 minutes. This pink eye remedy should be tried 3-4 times a day.

Other pink eye treatment at home includes washing your eyes with elderberry blossom tea. Be careful and gentle while washing your eyes. 

Alternate hot and cold compress on the closed eye have been found to be very effective natural remedy for pink eye.

There are many other home remedies for pink eye but what really matters is that if none of these work then you must contact your doctor for a medical treatment of conjunctivitis.

Bacterial conjunctivitis most of the time doesn’t effectively respond to home treatment for pink eye.
