Home Remedies for Palpitations

Palpitation of heart is an abnormality in which your heart flutters - beats too fast or too slow. The sensation can last for just a few seconds to hours.

It can be unnerving when you face palpitation. Sometimes palpitation is just a reaction to a preceding activity, but it can also be an indication of a serious underlying condition that may require immediate attention. Some drugs can also cause palpitations.

Most palpitations are harmless and can resolve on their own, others may require home remedies to get relief. However, some may require medical attention. Your doctor is the best judge to decide whether your palpitation requires proper treatment or not.

When palpitation is followed by dizziness, chest pain nausea or vomiting then it may be an indication of heart disease requiring immediate medical attention.

5 Home Remedies for Palpitation

Palpitation is a symptom. When all serious causes are overruled, then most palpitations are harmless and can be relieved by making lifestyle changes and using home remedies.

Once serious underlying conditions such as your thyroid malfunctioning and heart disease is ruled out, the following home remedies will be helpful to get relief from occasional palpitations.

1. Deep Breathing

If your palpitations is caused by stress and anxiety, then deep breathing is one of the best techniques to get rid of it.

Deep breathing is also good if your palpitations is caused by heart disease. Of course you will be taking prescribed medication for your heart disease but additional deep breathing will help improve your heart condition.

Deep breathing improves oxygen supply to the brain and helps your body feel relaxed.

  • sit in a comfortable position on a chair or cross legged on the floor
  • inhale slowly allowing your belly to pop out gradually
  • exhale slowly through your mouth to flatten your belly
  • repeat the inhalation and exhalation process for 10-20 minutes.
  • each breath should be slow and deep

Regular practice of meditation along with different yoga poses will not only relieve your palpitations but will also prevent future bouts of palpitations.

2. Coughing

Immediate remedy for palpitation is coughing. Coughing disrupts the palpitation and bring back normal heartbeat.

As soon as you realize the palpitation sensation, deliberately induce coughing. A few times of rhythmic coughing action will stop palpitations immediately.

Coughing of course is not a preventative remedy. It just gives you temporary relief. Use it when you are faced with palpitation. Coughing induces pressure in the chest and sometimes that is all you need to stop palpitations.

3. Drink Water

Drinking water as soon as you feel palpitation is another immediate remedy for palpitation. It is also not a permanent or preventative solution. It just is an instant solution to get relief from palpitation.

It is not clear as to why drinking water stops palpitations. It is believed that the drinking process activates esophagus that presses heart. The active focus on esophagus movement somehow brings back the heart beat rhythm to normal.

If you have nothing else to help then at-least coughing and drinking water should relieve your symptoms.

4. Take Rest

Palpitation is most of the time the body's way to alert you that stress levels have increased beyond your body's normal capabilities. Both the mental and physical stress can be significantly reduced by taking rest.

Build a habit of sleeping well through the night. You need 7-8 hours of sound sleep to regenerate energy for the next day.

Develop a regular habit of sound sleep and you can prevent palpitations. It will also improve your overall health and heart condition.

5. Exercise

When a sedentary person does a little extra work his body will not be able to do it easily. Climbing a few stairs can cause palpitations or playing a simple game requiring a little running may exhaust you and your heart may start beating faster.

Regular exercise for 30-60 minutes depending on the time available and your endurance power should make you fit within a month.

if you are fit then your blood circulation is normal, your brain is getting enough oxygen, then you will be able to handle higher level of both mental and physical activities without causing stress.

In addition to the above 5 remedies for palpitation, you should also look at your medication if any. Check with your doctor if one or more of these medications are causing palpitations. Doctor may change the prescriptions to stop palpitations.
