Migraines and Vomiting –Migraine Headaches can Cause Nausea and Vomiting

Migraines and Vomiting

Migraine can lead to vomiting but not always. It may not happen in every case of the attack and it may not happen to every one. But interestingly in most cases, vomiting relieves migraine pain.

A series of complex changes in nervous system force the digestive system to stop functioning for a short period during the migraine attack which results in food coming back to food pipe and thrown out through the mouth.

Once the migraine attack stops the stomach function resumes to normal. No more vomiting. However, in some cases the reverse happens. One vomit and the nervous system triggers to stop migraine.

Nausea is more prominent in migraine headaches than vomiting. Nausea can be misread for some other underlying conditions and the prescribed medication may not work. In such cases patient’s history of cyclic vomiting can reveal the possibility of migraine.

When a patient knows that the vomiting normally stops his/her migraine headache, then he may anxiously waits for vomiting to occur or may induce vomiting to get relieved of the pain. Is it a good idea to induce vomiting?

It certainly is not advisable to induce vomiting. One, the headache that appears to be migraine may not be due to migraine and two; the induced vomiting puts unnecessary stress on the body.

In various studies conducted to study the relation ship between cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS) and migraine, it was found that the chances of developing migraine are much higher (almost double) as compared to the normal people.

As it was found that the cyclic vomiting syndrome runs in families (genetics), the associated migraine was also found to be running in the families in those studies.
