We can divide the causes of heartburn in to the following two categories:
1- Lifestyle causes of heartburn.
Eating fatty and fried food slows down digestion process and keeps the food in the stomach for longer. This causes the pressure increase in the stomach and the acids may move up and get in to the food pipe. Don't eat fatty foods and if you have to eat them at all eat less in quantity and less frequently.
Eating too much at a time also slows down the digestion process and creates pressure for acids to move into the food pipe. Eat slowly, chew more and eat less!
Eating within the 2-3 hours of sleeping also causes the acids to move into the food pipe.Ffull stomach can cause stomach contents to press harder against the lower esophageal sphincter in the lying down condition thus causes heartburn in most cases.
Foods like chocolates, table salt, citric fruits, tomato and tomato based product, tea, coffee and alcohol can cause heartburn in many people depending upon the consumption patterns of these products. If any of these food products are causing heartburn in your case then stop using them.
2- Biological Causes of Heartburn.
Defective sphincter muscles causes inability to stop stomach acids to move up. These muscles can also become week during pregnancy and consumption of certain high blood pressure and depression medication. Check it out with your doctor.
Hiatal hernia is one of the other biological causes of heartburn. In the Hiatal hernia the stomach (upper portion) moves upward into the chest can cause stomach acids to move into the food pipe causing heartburn.
