Gout Diet- Foods That Help!


What food we eat and what we avoid can significantly impact Gout. Diet as in case of many other conditions and diseases plays a vital role in gout formation.

Gout is caused by deposits of needle like uric acid crystal on joints. Big Toe joint is usually the first and the most affected joint.

The uric acid crystal formation occurs due to either excess formation of uric acid in the body, kidney’s inability to excrete uric acid or increased consumption of foods that contain purines.

So what food should we eat that constitutes good gout diet?

Complex carbohydrates like breads, cereals, rice and past pasta are all good food items for gout prevention. Essential fatty acids giving food items like tuna and salmon and flaxseeds, nuts and other seeds are great. You can eat low fat dairy products.

Eat tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, red-blueberries and cherries. Fruits like Bananas, pineapple, oranges, tangerines and mandarins make a good diet for gout.

Dozens of vegetables including, red cabbage, cabbage, kale, parsley and all green leafy vegetables provide a good variety.

Chocolates, cocoa and even carbonated drinks are all acceptable food items as far as gout is concerned.

It is the proteins where a tofu and beans will be preferred against animal meats to make a good gout diet. 

Overall the medical fraternity recommends that a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables with no more than 15 % of calories coming from proteins and maximum 30 % coming from fats will form a good balanced food for gout.
