Food Allergy Rash – An Allergic Skin Reaction to Food Plus Other Symptoms
Allergies from food are very common. From a mild food allergy rash to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, swelling of airways to the lungs and chest pain etc are symptoms associated with food allergy. Rash is just one of the symptoms of food allergy.
These skin rashes can itch but usually don't turn into eczema or other dermatitis conditions. They just disappear within a couple of days after treatment or on their own.
Sometimes the food allergic symptoms and reactions can be dangerous and life threatening too.
What causes Food Allergy?
Food allergy is nothing but a body’s defense mechanism which sometimes mistakenly assumes one of the food ingredients (mostly proteins) as harmful. It creates antibodies to fight it. The symptoms of food allergy appear when the antibodies are fighting with the intruders.
Most common items, that cause food allergy rash on the skin and the other symptoms, include peanuts, walnuts, pecans and almonds, fish, milk, eggs, wheat and soy products.
Food Allergy Skin Rashes and Other Symptoms
Mild to widespread skin rashes in food allergy are the most common symptoms. Most of the time the rash may be so mild that the symptoms may remain unnoticed.
However, at times itchy food allergy rashes or hives can spread all over the body within no time of food intake.
Another severe reaction can be seen and felt in the form of swelling in the facial areas around eyes, cheeks, lips and throat.
Weakness and anxiety can be felt causing discomfort and confusion with no other apparent cause. Rapid heartbeats, low blood pressure and loss of consciousness can also be food allergy symptoms.
Breathing and swallowing problems sometimes accompanied with inability to speak are some of the other food allergy symptoms.
Throwing out (vomiting), diarrhea and stomach cramps are also common reaction of food allergy.
How to Prevent Food Allergy?
Allergy tests are important if you get frequent food allergies. Avoid taking those food items that cause allergies. Reading labels on the food shelves in the grocery should become a regular practice to avoid allergy causing food items and their derivatives.
Once you get food allergy skin rash or other symptoms, you should contact your doctor. In most cases you may just have to have patience. The symptoms will go away with time and in other cases you may require prescribed antihistamines. In severe cases hospitalization may be required.
In most cases food allergy rashes are the only main symptoms (in more than 80% cases) which go away on its own.
