Dermatitis Types – Different Types of Dermatitis and Their Symptoms

Though dermatitis in its most simple term is skin inflammation, the symptoms of its different types vary widely. 

From simple itchy red rashes to blisters it can be in any form. It is neither life threatening nor contagious but it can be embarrassing, uncomfortable and even painful.

Following are some of the most common types of dermatitis;

 

Contact Dermatitis
When an irritant like soap, metal, perfume, cosmetics or any other substance or allergens  come in contacts with the skin  and causes allergic reaction in the form of rashes and inflammation it is called contact dermatitis. It is classified as irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis

 

Atopic Dermatitis

This type of dermatitis is a chronic condition that results in a itchy and inflame skin. This usually occurs in the folds of the elbows, knees r he front of the neck. It periodically flares up and then subsides. It is more commonly known as eczema.

Neurodermatitis

This type of dermatitis occurs due to repeated scratching of the same area of skin. Regular scratching can cause patches of thickened reddish/brownish skin. It is also called Lichen simplex chronicus

Asteatotic Dermatitis

Skin becomes excessively dry in this type of dermatitis.

Seborrheic  Dermatitis

It is characterized by greasy yellow scales like dandruff on the scalp and other hairy areas of the head, neck and upper chest.

Stasis Dermatitis

Stasis dermatitis affects the skin of the lower legs. It usually cause the skin around the ankles and over the shins to become reddish or brownish. The skin can swell and gets thick. Causes of stasis dermatitis include varicose veins and congestive heart failure that impairs proper circulation and causes blood to pool in the lower legs

Nummular dermatitis

In this type of dermatitis coin shaped patches occur anywhere on the body mainly due to dryness of the skin.

There are many other lesser known dermatitis ad their numbers are increasing.
