Can Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration Go Unnoticed?


Early signs and symptoms of dehydration can certainly go unnoticed and it may not do much harm to adults. But, in case of children it is important to ensure that dehydration symptoms are taken seriously.  Any sign of it should warn you to take action because more children die of dehydration than any other single condition in the world.

In simple terms the sufferers of dehydration do not have enough fluid (water) in their bodies to get oxygen and nutrition to reach body tissues. If the early symptoms are not identified or ignored than tissues can get damaged and in worst case the patient may die.

It is easy to recognize the signs and symptoms of dehydration. Some of these symptoms can also be associated with other diseases. In any case the dehydration treatment will be the first to be given. In some cases the treatment may be just to drink lots of water and in other serious cases the saline water is given intravenous.

The easily recognizable signs and symptoms of dehydration include dizziness and headaches, dark urine and/or inability to urinate, dry mouth and nose, weakness, nausea and vomiting.

If any of the above signs and symptoms appear than go and drink a lot of water which should give some immediate relief. Adult will feel it and talk about it and will normally get the required treatment.

In children the signs and symptoms are slightly different and the adults have to recognize them. Dry mouth and tongue are very common in most children with dehydration.

If the child doesn’t get any tears when crying then it is a certain sign of dehydration. Other observation can be that there are no wet diapers for 3 hours or more. Additionally abdomen eyes and even ears may appear sunken. Child may have high fever with irritability. One sure sign of dehydration in children is the skin that does not flatten when pinched and released.

So don’t ignore any of these signs and symptom of dehydration which is easy to treat in its early stages at home. In advanced stages medical help is a must.
