More than 200 different types of viruses are known to cause the common cold. One of the most common varieties is Rhinoviruses (from the Greek rhin, meaning “nose”). Rhinoviruses (more than 110 distinct types) are responsible for 30 to 35 percent of all adult colds.  These viruses are most active in early fall, spring, and summer. They grow in the human nose.

During winter other variety of viruses called Coronaviruses cause majority of all adult colds. Only 3-4 type out of more than 40 types of Coronaviruses infect humans. The exact mechanism of  behavior of  coronaviruses to a cause of colds is difficult to study  because they are not easy to grow in the laboratory.

Adenoviruses, coxsackieviruses, echoviruses, enteroviruses , orthomyxoviruses (which cause flu), paramyxoviruses (including several parainfluenza viruses) and  respiratory syncytial virus  are  responsible for approximately 10-15 % of all the other common colds. These viruses are also responsible for other more severe respiratory illnesses

By now you would have realized that not only so many different viruses are responsible for causing common cold but also new cold viruses are constantly added up in the list. Therefore the body can never build up resistance against all of them. As a result frequent colds will remain recurring problem.

Exposure to cold weather or from getting chilled or overheated are not the causes of common cold but these exposures can some time act as catalyst to activate viruses. In addition there is no evidence that diet, enlarged tonsils or adenoids causes cold.

Psychological stress has been found in many researches to be a contributory factor in catching cold. The exact mechanism is not yet understood.

Neither it is possible to remember the names of all these viruses nor it is required but it is clear that most of the colds are caused by viruses.
