Causes of Vomiting and How to Deal with It?

Vomiting is not disease but a symptom of an underlying disease.  Since it often happens suddenly it's hard to prevent it particularly in case of kids. However in adults if nausea precedes it then it may be possible to prevent vomiting by taking some precautions. There are many causes of vomiting but they may differ based on age.

It is common for it  to occur in children due to viral infection, food poisoning or milk allergy. Other reasons in children include coughing, motion sickness, overeating or feeding, or blocked intestines and illnesses etc.

In adults many conditions are responsible for it. Some of the most common causes are listed below:

 

  • overeating is one of the most common reason
  • food poisoning is also a frequent reason
  • stomach Infections like Tuberculosis of intestine
  • intestinal blockage
  • acute gastritis
  • appendicitis
  • early stages of pregnancy
  • a reaction to certain smells or odors
  • ulcers
  • motion sickness or seasickness
  • medication induced vomiting
  • fear and other emotional stress, Bulimia or other psychological illnesses
  • intense pain
  • gallbladder disease
  • heart attack
  • migraines(vomiting due to migraine relieves of migraine)
  • concussion or brain injury
  • brain tumor
  • some forms of cancer
  • many other less common illnesses


In some cases hunger has been found to be responsible for it.

The timings usually can indicate the underlying causes. For example vomiting caused by food poisoning appears shortly after a meal.  

Most of the time it is temporary and harmless but certain vomiting may be early signs of a serious underlying disease. Therefore, it is important to not ignore it as a casual problem. If vomiting persists or accompanies with blood then doctors help becomes necessary to find the underlying causes of vomiting and treat it.
