Diarrhea Diet - BRAT Diet for Diarrhea & Stomach Upset
BRAT stands for Banana, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. A diet plan for diarrhea based on these food items helps relief from the stomach upset. These food items are low in fiber and residue. Leave all other solid foods aside for the time being until the symptoms of diarrhea disappear. But you must consume a lot of liquid and electrolytes to maintain proper hydration.

In case of sever diarrhea, you must consult your doctor. However in most cases of diarrhea, it is the food that helps or aggravate the stomach problem. Therefore, one must be careful on what to eat and what not to eat.
BRAT diet for diarrhea was broght to lime light by Duro and Duggan in 2007. Banana and Rice are effective in binding the stool. These starch in Banana and rice also help in reducing the chances of getting peptic ulcers. A fluid preparation of overcooked Rice helps in hydrating and decreasing the stool volumes.
The BRAT diet on its own is not nutritionally balanced. Therefore, other food items that completes the balance nutrients should also be consumed.
Carbonated beverages, fired and fatty items and foods containing high fiber should be avoided for a couple of days.
The changes in dietary habit during the stomach upset period should be strictly maintained.
Eat a ripe banana when feel hungry. Overcook rice in water so that it feels like a viscous syrup. Add salt and slowly sip the liquid. Ensure that you drink more water and other liquids with electrolytes. Over drinking will not harm in any way but less liquid consumption will make you tired and can have more serious consequences.
Diarrhea should never be taken lightly because it can become a life threatening condition if not controlled well in time. BRAT diet helps but doesn't in any way replaces the need to consume liquids and electrolytes to remain hydrated.
