Easy Anemia Prevention Tips

All types of anemia prevention is not possible. Inherited anemia, such as sickle cell anemia can’t be prevented but only treated, therefore regular consultations with doctors is necessary.

Anemia caused by iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies can be prevented by eating a healthy diet that includes foods rich in iron, folate and vitamin B-12. Vitamin C helps in absorption of Vitamin B12 therefore food containing Vitamin c is vital for prevention of anemia.

Iron requirements of growing children, pregnant and menstruating women, long distance runners and strictly vegetarian people are much higher than normal. Supplements or multivitamins containing iron for people with high iron requirements can be prescribed by doctors only when more iron is required than a balanced diet can provide. Overdose of iron can be dangerous therefore these supplements should not be taken without doctors consent.

The foods rich in iron include dark green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, iron-fortified cereals, dried fruit, nuts and seeds. The best source of iron is beef and some other meats.

Folate is found in dark green leafy vegetables, citrus juices and fruits, legumes and fortified breakfast cereals.

Vitamin B-12 is available in meat and dairy products.

Foods high in vitamin C help iron absorption so eating iron-rich foods along with high vitamin C content foods such as citrus fruits and juices, tomatoes, strawberries, and dark green vegetables will prevent anemia. A very tasty combination can be made by toping up cereals with strawberries and tomatos slices or have an orange with a peanut butter sandwich.

Re occurrence of iron and vitamin 12 deficiency type anemia can be prevented by dietary changes and consumption of iron and vitamin supplements.

Sometimes treatment of another medical condition can cause anemia. Certain types of thyroids and cancer treatments can cause anemia in some people.  Doctors under such circumstance may change the medicine options for that treatment to prevent anemia.
